But is the insomnia questionnaire you’re taking actually useful? If you're just taking some questionnaire on Buzzfeed and it's not a scientifically validated assessment, or isn't based on the actual diagnostic criteria for insomnia than you're wasting your time.
Take our online sleep insomnia test and get scientifically valid results.
The Truth About Diagnosing Insomnia
The truth is you don't need to take a quiz or a test to diagnose insomnia.
We've listed the diagnostic criteria or symptoms for a diagnosis of short-term insomnia and for chronic insomnia on our insomnia FAQ page. You can simply read the criteria and diagnose yourself. Simple as that.
But that's diagnosis. What's more important with any sleep disorder assessment is how do you know if you should seek support? Our assessment gives advice on if you need to seek insomnia treatment and when things probably aren't that bad.
Insomnia Quiz For Symptom Severity - When To Seek Treatment
Our test gives you feedback on how bad your symptoms of sleeplessness are and whether you should be thinking about treatment. The feedback is based on science, not on our opinion.
Here’s 5 key things you need to know about our questionnaire and why it's the best instrument available to check the severity of your symptoms and sleep problems more generally.
1) It's a scientifically valid questionnaire.
To be useful, a questionnaire needs to be scientifically valid. If the assessment hasn’t been scientifically validated then it’s basically useless.
The instrument we're using here is the Insomnia Severity Index or ISI, one of the most widely used and recommended measures in sleep medicine. It's valid for adults, older adults, and for teenagers.
2) Our free online insomnia test results tell you how severe your symptoms are.
It’s helpful to know if your symptoms are short term or chronic. But it’s even more helpful to know how severe your symptoms are compared to a standard.
That will help you to make decisions around whether you should seek treatment for your sleep issues, or whether your insomnia symptoms may not yet need professional support.
3) Changes in your score are actually meaningful.
Because it's a scientifically valid insomnia test, changes in your score actually mean something.
In fact, scientific studies of the ISI indicate that a change in score of 6 points is clinically significant (i.e. is a meaningful change to the patient).
So we use the Insomnia Severity Index to track treatment outcomes when we're working with insomnia clients treating insomnia. Most of our clients will finish treatment with an ISI score of 7 or less.
4) This insomnia test will not help you know if you have a diagnosis nor what causes insomnia for you.
The ISI is all about the severity of your symptoms. If you want to know if you have an insomnia diagnosis then you can simply look at the diagnostic criteria (signs and symptoms) on our insomnia FAQ page.
If you think you have a diagnosis, then your score here will tell you the severity of your symptoms of insomnia and whether you need to take action and talk to us (or anyone) about cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia.
Just remember, you need to sit down with a sleep specialist and have an assessment to rule out other possible sleep disorders and other factors before any diagnosis is confirmed. A good assessment should also cover mental health conditions, such as depression and generalised anxiety disorder (very common with sleep problems), and look at your sleep patterns by having you keep a sleep diary
5) Our test is for insomnia (but it can give an indication of how bad any sleep problem is)
There are a range of other sleep disorders, including sleep apnea, circadian rhythm sleep disorders, restless legs syndrome etc. This quiz isn't for those conditions, but does give an indication as to how bad the sleep problem is impacting you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an overnight sleep study for insomnia?
An overnight sleep study in a lab, known as a polysomnogram is not required. Diagnosis for most sleep disorders do not require tests to find out what underlies the sleep problem, a clinical interview is sufficient.
Who Is Best To Treat Insomnia?
It's a surprise to many to find out that a medical doctor or GP is typically not trained to treat insomnia. Instead, a psychologist or a mental health treatment qualified therapist with sleep psychology experience is the ideal treatment provider.
