Why Choose The Better Sleep Clinic Auckland?
Unlike other sleep clinics that are staffed primarily by medical doctors and physiologists, our sleep specialists are sleep psychologists. This means we are uniquely placed to provide expert management of insomnia and sleep disorders that have co-occurring mental health problems.
Most GPs and mental health providers do not appreciate the significant overlap between sleep disorders and mental health conditions (for example, monoamine neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine play a major role in depression and anxiety as well as in the control of sleep staging).
Even fewer medical doctors and sleep clinics have training in psychological treatments. This limits the ability of some sleep clinics to offer gold standard effective treatment plans for chronic insomnia and sleep conditions that overlap with psychological conditions. Likewise, there is limited support for the impact of a sleep disorder on mental health (and virtually all sleep disorders affect mental health).
That is why we receive referrals from other Auckland sleep clinics and treatment services throughout New Zealand for the behavioural management of sleep disorders.
We offer assessment, & treatment for the following mental health conditions:
Major Depressive Disorder (Depression)
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
Panic Disorder With & Without Agoraphobia
Social Anxiety Disorder
Generalised Anxiety Disorder
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
We can work with other treatment providers to provide sleep therapy for those with Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Bipolar Disorder (Type 1 & Type 2) Management and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
Do You Make Referrals To Other Auckland Sleep Clinics?
We make referrals to other sleep clinics where required (for example, we do not offer sleep apnoea diagnosis and treatment, nor do we offer polysomnographic sleep studies which are required for a limited number of sleep conditions). Likewise, we do not offer prescription medications so we work with your GP or psychiatrists to advise on medications that may be required in some situations, or may be preventing effective treatment of a sleep problem.
